The Specialist, Staff Accountant will be responsible for supporting with compliance projects and financial analysis for the accounting office of the Society for Human Resource Management and its subsidiaries (collectively “SHRM Companies”). This position will research, document, and apply federal tax law, state tax law, regulatory reporting requirements, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and other technical requirements for SHRM Companies’ business activities.
Prepare paperwork for various state sales tax submissions, business license renewals and annual reports
Track and process business invoices for payment
Generate accounting system reports for review
Provide analysis of various business areas, functions, and allocable expenses
Manage on-site tax files
Independently research various state business compliance requirements
Request and gather internal information from across the SHRM Companies and departments
Create and administer state tax prepayment accounts
Reconcile General Ledger activity
Develop and maintain procedures and documentation for job-related processes and make recommendations for improvements
Other duties and projects as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related areas
At least three (3) years of experience in accounting, tax, or government regulations, preferably with a tax or government office
Experience with researching corporate state and federal tax and regulatory requirements
Experience with faxing, copying, and drafting memos
Familiarity with accounts receivable, accounts payable, tax deductions and financial statements
Knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Excel, and Adobe Pro
Familiarity with business licenses, business registrations, business property tax, state sales taxes, and business income tax
Knowledge of business entity types
Knowledge of GAAP
Familiar with IRS Form 990 and Charitable Solicitation filings
Highly organized and detail oriented
Ability to research and communicate complex financial information successfully
MBA or Master’s degree in a related field preferred
Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.
Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing, and typing. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
Work is regularly performed in an office setting and routinely uses standard office equipment
Travel Required: Occasional 0-10%
