The Specialist, Exam Development, contributes to the development of stand-alone knowledge-based items and scenario-based situational judgment items for the certified professional (shrm-cp) and senior certified professional (shrm-scp) exams intended for human resources professionals. the specialist plays an instrumental role in all phases of the exam development, from the recruitment and management of the volunteer subject matter experts who serve as item writers, reviewers, and scoring panelists to the assembly and quality control of the operational forms administered. the incumbent works collaboratively with the team to accomplish the overall mission of the exam development unit.

Your Day:

  • Recruits volunteer Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) who are certified professionals; projects based on qualifications and pre-determined recruitment criteria. Meets targets for a diverse pool of Subject Matter Experts from the U.S. and outside the U.S. to maintain the certification exams’ standards as a global exam. Manages expenses to ensure expenses are on target or under budget.

  • Maintains demographic and performance records to support technical reporting and re-recruitment efforts. Determines and implements the best method for tracking, maintaining, updating, and communicating data to various stakeholders while preserving privacy matters with regard to confidential or personally identifiable information.

  • Manages communications including issuing and receiving signed confidentiality agreements and other information needed to plan test-development projects/activities; serve as communication liaison between Subject Matter Experts and test-development vendor. Provides data to test-development vendor as needed for international attendees to be admitted to secure test-development venues.

  • Contributes test-development expertise to improve items flagged for improvement. Revises items as needed and collaborates with management on revisions. Implements content changes; conducts final quality checks, involves management as needed, and transmit to the item bank to support version control.

  • Monitors and analyzes item bank for gaps. Transmits proficiency self-assessments to test-development vendor to determine item-writing assignments that will close gaps in the item bank or build deficient areas in the item bank.

  • Supports form building by working collaboratively with colleagues in psychometrics and score reporting to identify lists of eligible items, divide Situational Judgement Items into field-test sets and presents to management for discussion and decisions.

  • Monitors test development activities for occurrences that affect test security guidelines or accreditation standards, especially occurrences that indicate a potential breach has occurred. Alerts other team members, management and, if necessary, division leadership.

  • Supports documentation requirements of the department including, but not limited to, information needed to prepare technical reports, accreditation applications, practice analyses (e.g., literature reviews), standard setting, revisions to the BoCK or to prepare for an audit.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Industrial Organizational Psychology or related field required.

  • 3 years of professional experience required in test development, and in item development and managing a volunteer workforce specifically.

  • Solid writing, test-item writing and editing skills.

  • Detail oriented and logical thinking skills.

  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.

  • Flexibility to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Advanced-level Microsoft Excel skills.

  • Ability to adhere to deadlines and requirements

  • Working knowledge of basic psychometrics (to inform form-building responsibilities)

Let Us Know if You Have:

  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Industrial Organizational Psychology, or related field preferred.

  • 5 years of experience preferred, at least 3 of which in test-item development.

Certifications

  • SHRM certification highly desirable but not required

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.

  • Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing, and typing. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

Work Environment

  • Work is regularly performed in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.

  • Travel Required: Occasional 0-10%
