SHRM Senior Specialist, Learning & Development in Alexandria, Virginia

Overview

The SHRM Human Resources Department is dedicated to the highest quality of customer service delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and accuracy in the areas of total rewards and analytics, talent management and inclusion, organizational learning and talent development, and employee engagement and culture.

The Senior Specialist, Learning & Development, works in partnership with the Director, Organizational Learning & Talent Development in the development and implementation of robust training and professional development initiatives that expand the talents and skills of SHRM employees as well as contribute to a strong, resilient, and high performing organizational culture that empowers employees to contribute their best to the organization. This position requires extensive communication with SHRM colleagues and service providers. As a member of the HR team, this individual must exemplify the organization’s Guiding Principles, and ensure that interactions with the HR team are always of the highest quality.

Responsibilities

Your Day:

  • Works in partnership with the Director in the fulfillment of SHRM’s leadership and talent development priorities as outlined by SHRM’s Executive Leadership Team

  • Works in partnership with the Director in assessing SHRM’s talent development needs and determining the training interests of SHRM staff (focus groups, etc.)

  • Works in partnership with the Director in the development and implementation of training and development initiatives that are in alignment with SHRM’s succession plan

  • Leads training sessions and facilitates workshops, including, but not limited to, SHRM’s New Employee Orientation Experience, with a professional presence and in an engaging and interactive way

  • Leads the implementation of SHRM’s year-long new employee onboarding plan

  • Works in partnership with the Director in the creation of Individual Development Plans for SHRM employees

  • Assists the Director in researching best practices in corporate learning and development

  • Collaborates with the Total Rewards team in the execution of wellness trainings

  • Administers SHRM’s Educational Assistance and Awards Program (including tracking employee annual usage amounts to ensure budget compliance, etc.)

  • Handles logistics associated with the administration of SHRM’s training programs and activities (including, but not limited to, scheduling and interacting with trainers)

  • Manages, in collaboration with SHRM’s Communications Team, the dissemination of information related to HR-sponsored trainings

  • Tracks registrations and participation, and prepares training transcripts of educational accomplishments for employees

  • Tracks data and prepares reports on training and development outcomes; measures effectiveness, aligning metrics with organizational goals

  • Processes reimbursements and invoice payments

  • Tracks the learning and development budget utilization and financial transactions

  • Ensures compliance with SHRM’s records management policy

  • Provides general support for the Human Resources Team as needed

  • Other projects and duties as assigned

Qualifications

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Organizational Communications, Instructional Design, Training and Development, Psychology, Business Administration, or a related field, or an undergraduate degree in other areas with transferrable skills gained through on-the-job experience

  • Five to seven years of HR, Learning & Development, or other related work experience

  • Superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication (customer service) skills

  • Ability to think critically, independently, and exercise sound judgment

  • Demonstrates curiosity

  • Ability to interact and work with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds at all levels of the organization

  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy with a commitment to excellence; outstanding work ethic; and professionalism

  • Public speaking and presentation skills

  • Basic understanding of budgets, financial statements, financial reports, etc.

  • Ability to conduct online research

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google Docs

  • High level of initiative and self-motivation

  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Ability to thrive, at times with ambiguity, in a fast-paced culture

  • Ability to pivot quickly in the face of competing priorities

  • Willingness to go “above and beyond” to complete assigned duties within critical deadlines

  • Training, workshop facilitation, and public speaking experience

  • Prior coaching and training experience preferred
