SUMMARY

The Sr. Advisor, Government Relations is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with members of Congress, state legislators, federal agencies, regulatory officials, public policy decision makers, SHRM members, and others to achieve SHRM's strategic public policy objectives on HR public policy issues as they affect the management of human capital. Educate SHRM members on state and federal agency and regulatory developments and equip and motivate them to take an active role in influencing the issues that concern them.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain relationships with federal officials, state officials, SHRM members, and other public policy stakeholders in order to advance SHRM’s public policy objectives.

  • Monitor, identify and analyze appropriate pending legislation to determine key issues and potential cost/benefit to membership interests.

  • Establishes and maintains relationships with congressional and state executive branch and regulatory officials, SHRM members, and other stakeholders in order to advance SHRM’s overall public policy objectives.

  • Creates materials, programming, articles and information to educate SHRM members, and volunteer leaders on HR public policy issues.

  • Serves, as appropriate, as a SHRM representative in coalitions with other associations and organizations on HR public policy issues.

  • Prepare oral and written testimony on HR public policy issues before congressional/state legislature committees and regulatory bodies consistent with SHRM’s public policy objectives.

  • Analyze information, facilitate research, solicit input from SHRM panels and volunteers, and draft position papers on HR public policy issues for consideration by the SHRM Board.

  • Create educational materials and programs for use by SHRM volunteer leaders and member advocates to build and strengthen their advocacy activities, providing background material, advice and counsel to further our member advocacy efforts.

  • Assist with special projects related to state, federal and regulatory engagement.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree

Experience:

  • 6 years experience with Congress or state legislatures, executive or agency branches, government relations office, or advocacy work in trade association, campaign, grassroots firm or other organization.

  • Knowledge of the legislative, regulatory, and judicial process.

  • Understanding of HR issues/laws specifically related to healthcare, tax and labor preferred.

  • Excellent verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills, including experience in giving public presentations or speaking activities.

  • Creative approaches to problem solving.

  • Ability to simultaneously coordinate a variety of complex projects and work within activity program deadlines.

  • Ability and interest to travel for business.

  • Proficient in Microsoft (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel).

  • Knowledge of Social Media tools.

  • Solid customer service commitment: resourceful, diplomatic, team-oriented and sensitive to the needs of members and staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment, while successfully delivering to internal and external customers at all levels in a timely manner.

The hiring range for this position is $90,000 to $115,000 per year. This range is an estimate and the actual salary may vary based on the candidate's experience, skills, and qualifications.
