The Director, Finance leads the financial reporting, taxes, accounts payable and payroll functions for SHRM and its affiliates and subsidiaries (collectively “SHRM Companies”). The director is responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, tax laws, and authoritative guidance that comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to ensure transparent, timely, and accurate work products, sound internal controls and satisfaction from internal and external customers. Working in close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, the director ensures the distribution of timely and accurate financial and metric reporting and fulfils the accounting department’s role in the organization’s budget process

Your Day:

  • Direct the production of timely and accurate monthly and year-end financial statements for all SHRM companies. Ensures financial statements are fairly stated through professional judgment, variance analysis, substantive reviews, and monthly account reconciliation processes that timely address and clear reconciling items. Leads year-end financial audit through accurate and effective communication with external auditors and timely follow up on formal and informal auditor recommendations.

  • Evaluates, implements, and ensures proper accounting and internal control structure. Manages the recording and authentication of all financial transactions and events, and the chart of accounts to meet reporting needs.

  • Researches accounting literature, maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures in acceptable formats, and applies Generally Accepted Accounting Principles to SHRM Companies’ business activities.

  • Ensures business systems are effective and efficient, leads user analysis of systems and tools required in the accounting department, and advocates and supports technology changes through resource allocation and effective communication.

  • Provides support in the management of the Accounting Department's annual budget processes. Oversee the annual budget and the spring and fall forecasts process to ensure proper facilitation and accurate analysis output.

  • Responsible for overseeing the preparation of the weekly management reports to Senior Management and other department management reports.

  • Oversee the Accounts Payable and Payroll functions to ensure timely and accurate payments are processed.

  • Coach, mentor and develop the staff reporting under this role, and maintain a positive working relationship with all stakeholders.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business or related field; or equivalent relevant experience

  • At least ten (10) years of related accounting experience with three or more years management experience.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact and communicate with all organizational levels.

  • Working knowledge of GAAP compliance.

  • Track record of driving process improvements.

  • Strong computer and Microsoft suite skills.

  • Ability to attract, develop and lead a high-performing staff of professional accountants.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.

  • Certified Public Accountant required

Let Us Know If You Have:

  • Master’s degree.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Accounting systems and chart of accounts., Experience with NetSuite Accounting systems and Adaptive Planning, accounting system conversions, and implementation of robust reporting tools.

  • Experience with a nonprofit organization.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.

  • Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing and typing. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

  • Light lighting is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force to constantly move objects.

Work Environment

  • Work is regularly performed in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.

  • Travel Required: Occasional 0-10%
