The Instructional Design Director leads a team of instructional designers in the design, development, and delivery of SHRM’s education portfolio for external audiences, including live instructor-led programs (both in-person and virtual), eLearning, and blended learning deliverables, plus a variety of internal and external client-based projects.

The Director, Instructional Design position requires a strong track record of innovative thinking coupled with proven project management skills. Key attributes for success include: a history of on-time delivery using sound project management principles and practices; highly effective people management skills; exceptional instructional design skills with experience at the senior level; a smart and curious thinker who uses flexibility and agility to problem solve and meet changing needs; powerful and persuasive communication skills; and high creativity with the ability to source and secure innovative partners and design assets.

Your Day:

  • Manage the organization’s competency and skill-based professional development product portfolio, including initiatives tied to eLearning, Seminars, and Specialty Credentials.

  • Lead a creative visioning and articulation process that constantly pushes the state of the art in organizational learning and development and positions SHRM as a thought and practice leader not only with regard to HR learners but across industry and government at large.

  • Translate market demand, content gap studies, and organizational strategic initiatives into instructionally sound deliverables, and collaborate with SHRM leadership on the long-term content strategy and monitor the annul project deliverable schedule.

  • Manage and guide instructional designers to meet project milestones, prioritize deliverables, and contribute using instructional design experience and skills when necessary to meet project timelines and other project priorities. This includes communicating project risks and developing appropriate mitigation strategies to minimize risk.

  • Ensure the advancement of the instructional design team’s professional development to enrich their knowledge, skills, and abilities, and research and keep abreast of the most recent innovative instructional design development technologies.

  • Foster collaborative relationships with internal and external subject matter experts, external instructional design vendors, program instructors, and with all staff across the organization.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Must Haves:

  • Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or related field

  • Over 10 years of instructional design or related work experience

  • A minimum of six years of strong people management through all stages of the instructional design process, including analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Experience with associations, HR, and the design and development of training deliverables for external audiences is preferred.

  • Proficiency or a familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Articulate 360 Storyline and Rise, LMS, educational virtual, and webinar platforms. (Experience with other similar platforms coupled with a strong willingness to learn and grow in these areas is acceptable.)

  • Effective written and oral communication and the ability to collaborate effectively throughout the organization, and with external subject matter experts, vendors, and association members.

  • Ability to successfully turn agreed upon educational initiatives into instructionally sound deliverables in a timely and consistent manner, and in alignment with the association’s strategic goals.

  • Knowledge and experience with video production and editing, graphic design, and 2D & 3D animations.

  • Strong customer orientation with a deep passion for creating and delivering learning programs that create a direct positive impact in the workplace.

  • Ability to lead and develop effective teams.

Work Environment

  • Work is regularly performed in a combination of office and conference settings and routinely uses standard office equipment.

  • Travel Required: Occasional 0-10%
